Working While Being a Student: Benefits & Detriments

High school itself can seem like it takes up a lot time in your life. Why, then, would you want to add any additional responsibilities?! Working as a student can be tough, but it brings with it a lot of advantages.

These are typically more labor-based jobs that are less variable in nature, but often very secure and can be lucrative for a high school student. These are jobs like food service, stocking, and customer service that require some level of activity as well as interaction with the general public. Many of these opportunities may be taxing, but the stability of set after-school hours and benefits can help you out.

Because these jobs are more taxing and have long hours, being able to take on a part-time labor-based job while having good grades often can make you stand out on your college application or for future employers. Additionally, some companies such as Burger King have scholarships for students who were employed at that company.

Benefits of Traditional Employment

  • Financial Incentives like healthcare, tuition assistance, and union protections often increase the value of traditional employment substantially. Some companies even offer 401k matches and stock incentives for employees. Large corporations like Starbucks and Kroger offer free online university tuition at specific schools, and up to $21,000 in tuition reimbursement, respectively.

  • Steady hours and a more monotonous routine can be really beneficial to ground students and introduce them steadily into the world of official employment. Many companies have set hours and a straightforward path to earning promotions.

  • Union protections are available to a lot of corporate jobs, especially those in places like grocery stores, mills, factories, and stocking centers. These protections offer wage security, specific benefits, and were key in obtaining extra pay for essential workers during the pandemic.

Detriments of Traditional Employment

  • These are often considered undesirable jobs for adults because of their low pay scale. Many foodservice and customer service jobs that are popular among teens pay just above minimum wage, so it can be difficult to accrue capital if you have monthly expenses like rent, groceries, and utilities. These jobs may require long hours in order to get a promotion, and those hours may not leave time for your education.
