Exemplar Student Response

The following is an exemplar student response from a prompt inquiring about working as a volunteer in a Latino Center for youth. This response would earn a 5 on the exam.

Estimada Directora Maria Eugenia Montes,

Atentamente,

María Rebecca

Question 2: Persuasive Essay

INSTRUCTIONS: You will write a persuasive essay to submit to a Spanish writing contest. The essay topic is based on three (3️⃣) accompanying sources, which present different viewpoints on the topic and include both print 📰 and audio 🎧 material. First, you will have 6 minutes to read the essay topic and the printed material. Afterward, you will hear the audio material twice; you should take notes while you listen. Then, you will have 40 minutes to prepare and write your essay.

In your persuasive essay, you should present the sources’ different viewpoints 🤔 on the topic and also clearly indicate your own viewpoint and defend it thoroughly. Use information from all of the sources to support your essay. As you refer to the sources, identify them appropriately. Also, organize your essay into clear paragraphs.

PRO TIPS

Writing the persuasive essay is hard, but don’t be discouraged! The most important things to remember are:

  • Pick a side, doesn’t matter which one you choose, but defend it to the end

  • Use ALL 3 sources, it’s impossible to get a 5 if you leave out a source

  • SYNTHESIZE the sources, (don’t write a summary of the source, tell us how it defends your thesis)

Below is an outline that’s helpful when planning out your essay. Note that this is just a recommendation, you can have 4 paragraphs instead of 5 depending on how you argue your thesis. Either way though, you need to get at least 4 paragraphs in.

  1. Introduction (1 paragraph)

    • Hook: Capture the interest of the reader

    • Narrow your focus: Move from general ideas to topics specific to your thesis statement.

    • Thesis statement:

      1. Take a stance on issue: clearly state what side you’re on

      2. It’s the last sentence in your introduction

      3. Tell the three main supporting points that will become your next 3 paragraphs (body of the essay before the conclusion)

  2. 1st paragraph

    • Topic sentence: Each new paragraph should begin with a sentence designed to specify the contents of the paragraph

    • Evidence: Use evidence (Source 1, 2, or, 3) to support your ideas

    • SYNTHESIZE the source to support your thesis: Do NOT write a summary of what the source says. Explain HOW it supports your thesis.

    • Opposition/Rebuttal: If the source you’re describing goes AGAINST your main point, refute it.

    • Smooth transition: Finish your paragraph (and begin your next paragraph) that leads the momentum of the essay onto a new point.

  3. 2nd paragraph

    • Repeat the exact same steps from paragraph 1, but with a different source

  4. 3rd paragraph

    • Repeat the exact same steps from paragraphs 1 and 2, but with the final source you haven’t used yet

  5. Conclusion

    • Reiterate your thesis statement (write it similarly, not identically)

    • Summarize your first, second, and third supporting points

    • End with a “call to action” and/or a strong appeal. This is the last thing a reader reads, go out with a BANG!

    • NOTE: If you don’t get to a conclusion, it’s okay so long as you have a super strong intro and solid body paragraphs

Exemplar Student Response

The following is an exemplar student response to the question ¿Tendrá el calentamiento global efectos catastróficos? This response would earn a 5 on the exam.

Question 3: Conversation

INSTRUCTIONS: You will participate in a conversation 🤝 First, you will have 1 minute to read a preview of the conversation, including an outline of each turn in the conversation. Afterward, the conversation will begin, following the outline. Each time it is your turn to speak, you will have 20 seconds to record ⏺️ your response. You should participate in the conversation as fully and appropriately as possible.

PRO TIPS

At this point in the test you’ve made it through all the reading and writing, now it’s just the speaking portion. Take a breather, the conversation should be fun! Try not to take this part too seriously, remember, you’re talking with a friend, so have some fun with it!

The most important things to remember when recording your conversation are:

Talk for the entire 20 seconds

Make sure you talk for the entire 20 seconds when it’s your turn, even if you repeat yourself or feel awkward! It’s better to fill up the time than to stop early. If you’re still talking and go over the beep noise, that’s okay.

Respond to the prompt appropriately

On the prompt where it says “tú” it tells you exactly how to respond—follow and pay attention to the “tú” prompts. If it says to respond positively, respond positively. If it tells you to offer a solution, give a solution. Failing to do so will result in points taken off for each time you respond incorrectly/do not address the prompt.

Use varied vocab and grammar tenses

Show off your Spanish skills here! You want to prove to the listener that you can conjugate verbs in different tenses and have a depth of vocabulary. Don’t be afraid to be silly either, you’re supposed to be talking to a friend, so long as you’re responding to the prompt correctly, it’s all good.

If you make a mistake, self-correct

Conjugate a verb wrong? Said “tengo” when you meant to say “tenía?” No sweat! If you self-correct in the moment, it’s not a big deal. You’re being graded on how easily you’re understood, so if you fix any errors as you’re speaking to the point where it’s easily understandable, you won’t lose a ton of points. However, do NOT use Spanglish. Any English during the speaking sections is a big no-no 👎.

Exemplar Student Response

Below is a sample prompt and an exemplar response. This response would earn a 5 on the exam. Again, pay attention where it says Tú:. On the real test, annotate those portions, they tell you how to respond to the prompt specifically (asking details, giving an opinion, responding negatively, etc).

Question 4: Cultural Comparison /

INSTRUCTIONS: You will make an oral presentation 🗣️ on a specific topic to your class. You will have 4 minutes to read the presentation topic and prepare your presentation. Then you will have 2 minutes to record ⏺️ your presentation.

In your presentation, compare your own community 🇺🇸 to an area of the Spanish-speaking world 🇲🇽🇦🇷🇵🇷🇵🇦 with which you are familiar. You should demonstrate your understanding of cultural features of the Spanish-speaking world. You should also organize your presentation clearly.

PRO TIPS

Once you’ve made it to comparación cultural, you’re in the home stretch. This is the last task of the AP Spanish exam, and tests your ability to speak without pauses for a full two minutes. Pero no te preocupes, ¡sí se puede! Follow these pointers for a 5️⃣:

Talk for the entire 2 minutes

This is the most important factor of the comparación cultural. You’re being graded on your Spanish endurance, but also your ability to jump in between two different cultures. If you space out with time left, revisit what you’ve already said and say it in different words. It’s better to be repetitive than to have nothing recorded.

Spend equal time on your community and the Spanish speaking community

Many students end up not passing this portion because they spoke ONLY about their native culture or ONLY about a Spanish speaking culture. ¡Ten cuidado! You have to elaborate on both your culture AND and the culture of the Spanish speaking country. Don’t be afraid to practice at home! Doing practice voice memos and listening back to them can be really helpful.

Keep it organized

Here’s a basic outline for how you should organize your verbal response:

  1. Hook

    1. This is your first line, say something bold to grab the listener’s attention

  2. Say what you’re coming to compare

    1. Explicitly state which countries/cultures you’re going to compare

  3. Talk about USA

    1. Give specific details and examples about your native culture, do NOT be vague

  4. Talk about Spanish speaking country

    1. Give specific details and examples about a Spanish-speaking culture, do NOT be vague

  5. Talk about similarities/differences

    1. If what you’re comparing is more similar, talk about that

    2. If what you’re comparing is more different, talk about that

    3. If you can squeeze in both similarities/differences, awesome, if not, no worries

  6. Close it out with a quick conclusion

    1. Keep this to one sentence, think of it as your buzzer beater, shoot the last shot and tie your whole presentation together in the last 10 seconds
