In the context of social stratification, a closed system is a society where an individual's social position is fixed at birth and cannot be changed through personal achievement or effort. These systems are characterized by little to no social mobility, meaning people remain in the same social status they were born into throughout their lives.
Think of a closed system as an elevator with no buttons inside. Just like being born into a specific floor without the option to move up or down, individuals in a closed system are confined to the social class they are born into without the possibility of moving to a different class based on their actions or achievements.
Caste System: A form of social stratification where individuals' positions are ascribed based on their birth, and changing these positions is virtually impossible.
Social Mobility: The movement of individuals, families, or groups through a system of social hierarchy or stratification.
Meritocracy: A societal system in which advancement is based on individual ability or achievement, contrasting sharply with the concept of a closed system
