functionalism

Definition

Functionalism in the context of international law and organizations is a theory that emphasizes the importance of practical cooperation between states on specific issues rather than on broad ideological agreements. It posits that such cooperation can lead to peace and integration by focusing on mutual interests and benefits.

Analogy

Imagine a group project where each student is responsible for a different part of the assignment, based on their skills and interests. Instead of arguing over the theme of the project, they concentrate on completing their individual tasks well, which leads to the project's overall success. Similarly, functionalism suggests that when countries collaborate on concrete projects without getting bogged down by broader political disagreements, they achieve more effective governance.
