This term refers to the period in African history from 500 AD to 1500 AD, following the end of the classical era. It was a time of significant political, economic, and cultural development across the continent.
Think of Post-Classical Africa as a bustling city that's just starting to grow. Just like how different neighborhoods in a city develop their own unique cultures and economies over time, different regions in Africa were developing distinct political systems, trade networks, and cultural practices during this period.
Axum Empire: An important trading nation in northeastern Africa, existing from approximately 100–940 A.D., known for its monumental obelisks and its early adoption of Christianity.
Swahili Coast: The coastal area of East Africa inhabited by the Swahili people. It was an important region for trade between Africa and Asia during the post-classical era.
Great Zimbabwe: A medieval city located in Southeastern Africa which was a powerful trading empire from the 11th to 15th centuries.
