The Hacienda System was a form of large-scale agricultural estate system established by the Spanish in colonial Latin America and the Philippines. It involved landowners, known as hacendados, who controlled vast amounts of lands and indigenous labor.
Think of the Hacienda System like a giant farm monopoly game. The hacendados are the players who own all the property (land) and control all the pieces (indigenous labor). They set up their own rules and everyone else has to play along.
Encomienda System: A legal system used by the Spanish during colonization where they were granted rights to local Native American labor in exchange for providing protection and Christian education.
Latifundia: Large agricultural estates owned by wealthy families in ancient Rome, similar to haciendas but in a different historical context.
Feudalism: A social system prevalent in medieval Europe involving lords, vassals, and serfs; it's another example of an economic system based on land ownership and control over labor.
