The Eastern Front refers to the fighting on the eastern edge of Europe during World War I, primarily between Germany and Austria-Hungary on one side and Russia on the other.
Imagine playing chess on two different boards at once. While you're focused on one board (the Western Front), your opponent makes a move on the second board (the Eastern Front). You have to split your attention and resources between both games.
