Neurocognitive disorders are a category of mental health disorders that primarily affect cognitive abilities including learning, memory, perception, and problem solving.
Think about your brain as a computer. Normally, all your files are organized neatly so you can find them easily. But with neurocognitive disorders, it’s like someone came in and shuffled all your files around – making it hard to locate information or process new data correctly.
Dementia: A chronic or persistent disorder marked by mental processes caused by brain disease or injury characterized by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning.
Delirium: An acutely disturbed state of mind characterized by restlessness, illusions, and incoherence occurring in intoxication or medically ill individuals.
Amnestic Disorder: A disorder characterized by severe memory impairment without other significant cognitive loss typically due to damage to the brain from physical trauma or disease.
