Identity formation, also known as individuation, is the development of an individual's distinct personality and sense of self that is separate from their parents or caregivers. This process involves exploring different roles, beliefs, values, and behaviors to establish one's unique identity.
Think of identity formation like creating a custom character in a video game. You try out different outfits (roles), weapons (beliefs), skills (values), and actions (behaviors) until you find the combination that feels most "you."
Self-concept: The understanding and assessment of who you are.
Role confusion: A situation in which an individual does not know or is unclear about their life roles due to conflicting societal expectations.
Personal fable: A belief held by many adolescents telling them they are special and unique, so much so that none of life's difficulties or problems will affect them regardless of their behavior.
