This is a perceptual tendency to separate whole scenes or objects into a prominent, clear figure (object of focus) and a more indistinct background (ground).
Imagine you're looking at a photo of your friends at a party. Your eyes immediately focus on your friends (the figure), while the rest of the party scene becomes the background (the ground).
