Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. It includes conditions previously considered separate — autism, Asperger's syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and an unspecified form of pervasive developmental disorder.
Think of ASD as a radio with multiple stations. Just like each station plays different music, people with ASD can have very different symptoms and abilities - hence the term "spectrum".
Neurodevelopmental Disorders: These are disabilities in the functioning of the brain that affect a child’s behavior, memory or ability to learn - ASD is one type of neurodevelopmental disorder.
Social Communication Disorder (SCD): This is a condition where individuals have difficulty using verbal and nonverbal behaviors for social interaction - often seen in those with ASD.
Sensory Processing Disorder: This is when the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes through the senses. Many people with ASD also have this condition.
