A formal region is an area that is defined by a common characteristic, such as a physical attribute (like a mountain range) or a human attribute (like a country with the same government).
Think of formal regions like different sections in a grocery store. The produce section has all fruits and vegetables, the dairy section has all milk products - each section is defined by what it contains.
Physical Geography: This refers to the study of natural features and phenomena on the planet's surface, like landforms, climates, plants, etc.
Cultural Region: An area defined by unique cultural characteristics such as language, religion or customs.
Political Geography: The study of how humans have divided up the surface of the Earth for purposes of management and control.
