Petroleum is a naturally occurring liquid found beneath the Earth's surface that can be refined into various types of fuels.
Imagine petroleum as your school cafeteria’s mystery soup. It starts out as a mix of different ingredients (hydrocarbons), but after it goes through some cooking processes (refining), it becomes something we can use - food for us, fuel for cars!
Crude Oil: Unprocessed oil directly extracted from underground; it’s like raw vegetables before they're cooked into soup.
Refinery: An industrial facility where crude oil is transformed into usable products such as gasoline or heating oil; this would be your school kitchen where raw ingredients become edible meals.
Fossil Fuels: Natural fuels such as coal or gas formed in geological past from remains of living organisms; these are other "recipes" the Earth has cooked up over millions of years.
