Two regions located in northeastern France. They have been contested territory throughout history, particularly between Germany and France.

Treaty of Frankfurt: Signed in 1871 after Franco-Prussian War, it led to Germany annexing Alsace-Lorraine from France.
World War I: A global conflict from 1914-1918; following this war, Alsace-Lorraine was returned to France under Treaty of Versailles.
World War II: Another global conflict from 1939-1945; during this war, Nazi Germany again occupied Alsace-Lorraine but it was returned to France after Germany's defeat.
